Biden government released figures, biggest decrease in US nuclear arsenal
America’s nuclear weapons have decreased over the past two years. For the first time in four years, the US has made public the figures of its nuclear arsenal. The previous President Donald Trump had banned these figures from being made public. The Biden government has published these figures for the first time, removing this ban.As of September 30, 2020, the US had 3,750 active and inactive nuclear weapons. This number is 55 from 2018 and 72 less than 2019. This is the lowest number of US nuclear weapons since 1967. At the height of the Cold War in 1967, the US had 31,255 nuclear weapons.The Biden government is working with Russia to reduce nuclear weapons. The New START agreement is about the number of nuclear weapons the US and Russia have. That is, how many nuclear weapons can both countries have. Under this agreement, both countries can deploy a maximum of 1,550 nuclear weapons.
