Now he is one of the most powerful people in the world, but many years ago Barack Obama was a nobody, a young Harvard graduate, starting his practice of law and his work as a social activist. Michelle Robinson had also studied Law at Harvard – and before that, at Princeton – and had already been at Sidley & Austin for some time, one of the best law firms in Chicago and where Barack stopped to do his summer internships.
He insistently courted her and she rejected him as far as she could: dating the fellow compromised her professional aspirations. A young black woman had it complicated enough in a white male world to start dating the first handsome young black man to walk through the door. But the rendezvous eventually came: there was a museum visit, Spike Lee’s movie, a shared ice cream, and a kiss. The African-American zone was where Michelle grew up and where Barack, with his social work, but the first seed in his climb to the White House.
They were married on October 3, 1992, and almost thirty years later Michelle and Barack love each other like the first day.
