NWSL Draft: NJ/NY Gotham FC land USWNT forward Lynn Williams in trade, send No. 2 pick to Kansas City Current

During the Thursday NWSL Draft, the Kansas City Current and NJ/NY Gotham FC accomplished a significant exchange.

For forward Lynn Williams of the United States women’s national team, Gotham FC exchanged their second-round selection. For the east coast team, it was their third trade of the day following deals with Racing Louisville FC and San Diego Wave FC.

Lynn Williams was originally acquired by Kansas City Current in a trade with North Carolina Courage during the offseason, but the winger missed the whole regular season due to a hamstring ailment that necessitated surgery. Williams underwent therapy in order to regain her fitness in 2023, and she is presently in New Zealand for January camps with the USWNT. She won a bronze medal with the USWNT during the Tokyo Olympics, and she is anticipated to make a strong case for a spot on the team for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Michelle Cooper, a Duke sophomore and recipient of the Mac Harmann Trophy was picked second by The Current. She is merely the most recent in a slew of off-season transactions made by Kansas City. Brazilian international Debinha was one of the numerous free agents that the team just signed.

The team chose Jenna Nighswonger out of Florida State after a significant transaction earlier in the day between Gotham FC and Racing Louisville FC transferred the No. 4 overall pick to New Jersey.

10:23 p.m.: The USWNT defender Emily Sonnett was the player to be named later, and the OL Reign have now confirmed that they did, in fact, acquire her in a third-round trade with the Spirit. 9:07 p.m.: The Washington Spirit did nothing at all but embark on a mind-bending excursion that could only take place during the draught. They first exchanged $75,000 in allocation funds for the 29th and 34th overall picks from Orlando. Then, they gave Louisville the 29th pick and an additional $30,000 in allocation funds so that they could move up to No. 28 and choose Gonzaga goalie Lyza Bosselmann.
